How to Get More GP Referrals

One of the main things that our clients tell us that they’re seeking is more client referrals from GPs.

If you are a psychologist, occupational therapist, psychiatrist, dietitian, social worker or counsellor, you may be searching for more referrals too, but are unsure how to become the top choice for your local GPs to refer to.

Building a relationship with referrers is super important - this can take time to build trust. As you can imagine, GP’s want the very best care for their patients. They want their patients to be well cared for and it is a big deal for them to entrust you with that responsibility, so you need to prove you can truly improve patient outcomes!

Here are some of our top tips for approaching GPs for referrals.

1. Do your research

Before heading out to a GP practice, research the practice and the patient base to ensure that your services are a good fit for their patients. Consider the types of patients they see, the physical area they are in and the difficulties they may be facing in regards to patient health management.

2. Establish a relationship

Building a relationship with a GP and their support staff is key to getting referrals. Attend or hold a networking event, send a personalised email introducing yourself and your services, and consider offering to meet with them in person to discuss how you can work together to better their patient’s health.

3. Provide information

Provide information about your services, including your qualifications, experience and the benefits your services offer their patients. This can help build trust and credibility. Make sure they know the process for referring to you – make this step easy and accessible for referrers and patients, and don’t forget to let them know your waiting times!

4. Follow up

Follow up with the referrer after your initial contact to see if they have any questions or concerns. Keep them updated on your services and successes, and offer to provide educational materials, training or support.
